Vacation: Residents receive three weeks paid vacation each academic year, plus five days for approved continuing medical education leave in each of the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. Vacation is allowed in one-week blocks only, and may be prescheduled by the Program for PGY-1s. Vacation does not accrue if unused. Sick Leave: Accumulated at a rate of 1 day per month, up to a maximum of 12 days per year. Sick leave does not accrue if unused. Health Plan: Comprehensive health coverage for the resident and his/her dependents through the General Health System Health Plan - paid by Baton Rouge General. Optional medical spending account, dental insurance plan and dental discount plan can be chosen at the resident's expense. Life Insurance: This hospital paid policy is available for all full-time residents on their date of hire and is equal to 1X their annual salary, up to $50,000. Residents also receive an additional $200,000 in term life and accident death insurance. PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY Insurance: House staff are covered through the Louisiana Patient Compensation Fund and General Health System's Professional Liability Plan for all duties performed as a resident - paid by Baton Rouge General. Professional Fees: The Program pays dues for residents to belong to the American College of Physicians and the Louisiana State Medical Society. The Board Exam fee will be paid for each third-year resident in good academic standing during the PGY-3 year. ACLS recertification will be provided or paid for (up to $150) one time during residency. The USMLE Step 3 exam fee will be paid (if exam is taken by June 30th of the resident's PGY-1 year). CME Fund: Each resident receives a fund, currently $1,800, from which they may draw $600 during the PGY-1, PGY-2 and PGY-3 years to support attendance at Continuing Medical Education meetings or for personal professional books, journals or materials - paid by Baton Rouge General. Approval criteria will apply to use of the funds. Moving Expenses: New residents may receive reimbursement of up to $1,000 for actual incurred expenses - paid by Baton Rouge General. Financial Management: Personal retirement savings funds with unique and valuable tax advantages are available through the General Health System Tax Sheltered Annuity program. Regular share savings account by payroll deduction and other savings and loan programs are available at Bayou Federal Credit Union. Other Discounts: Residents receive discounts on prescriptions and discounts for services, programs and facilities of General Health System. Other Benefits: White coats (three at the beginning of residency) and laundry service are provided and paid by Baton Rouge General. Resident Lounge is available exclusively for our residents and includes various amenities. In addition, each resident has their own e-mail address, plus internet access and other computer resources. The Physicians' Lounge is open for residents to relax, privately access telephones and dictate records using the hospital's centralized dictation telephones. Complimentary meals are available while on-call and at many conferences, as well as in the Physicians' Lounge. Residents will receive a discount at the hospital's cafeteria. Complimentary covered multi-tiered parking is also provided in a secured lot conveniently connected to the Baton Rouge General by a crosswalk.
